Juggling Sticks
For Schools
Juggling Sticks are a concentration absorbing toy.  I have been constructing and playing with them ever since being introduced to them in Canada in 1993.  With this much experience, practice must make perfect?  I can bring a wealth of knowledge to the classroom to inspire and guide students to complete the project successfully.
One Day Workshop This multi curriculum unit includes technology, science and physical education. Students will examine the principles of rotating objects, modify a design and make an attractive and durable set of juggling sticks for school use or to take home.
Year: 4-8 Materials Cost: $1.50 per student Time: One day

Juggling Sticks Instructions
Difficulty to make: capable 9+ years old
Materials
Car tyre inner-tube, 2 rectangles, approximately 120mm by 240mm
Bicycle inner-tube, 3 strips 10mm by 1+ meters
Bamboo, 12mm diameter, juggling stick 550mm, 2 x handsticks 430mm
Duraseal colour strips 3 x 50mm by 450mm
Insulation tape various colours
Tools
Staple gun, ruler, good scissors, permanent marker, hacksaw

Instructions
1 Saw bamboo to length, use the thickest end of the bamboo for the juggling stick.
2 Wrap bamboo with duraseal book covering
3 Cut rubber strips, cut bicycle inner-tube at valve, then into 10mm wide strips
4 Mark out and cut 'flowers' from car inner-tube. Cut tassels approx 70mm long
5 Staple rubber strips onto end of bamboo. Wrap around over staple. Stretch and spiral strip down length of bamboo, wrap two times at end of bamboo then spiral back up to beginning. Staple strip in place then cover with insulation tape. Rubber strip must be wrapped tightly so that it cannot be moved!
6 Staple flowers onto ends of juggling stick, wrap around tightly then staple again. Wrap with insulation tape. Test that flowers cannot be pulled off easily!
7 Find balance point in centre of juggling stick and mark with insulation tape.
Notes:
• Bicycle inner-tube, leather or any durable fabric can be used in place of car inner-tube but should be made with a longer rectangle to have a similar weight.
• If balance point is not in the measured center of the juggling sticks the flowers can be trimmed to even the weight.
• Make sure inner-tube strip and flowers are wrapped and secured tightly!
• Different materials can be used for the sticks. If using wooden dowel, check there are no knots in the wood.
ENJOY!
